Shaarik Zafar is right at the center of today’s debate on the usage of technology in today’s society. As a Public Policy Manager at Facebook, he drives policy development and stakeholder engagement at the intersection of technology, civil and human rights, and national security. His work directly impacts Facebook’s content moderation and hate speech policies and its relationship with civil and human rights organizations.

Prior to joining Facebook, Shaarik served as the Special Representative to Muslim Communities at the Department of State, the Director for Global Engagement at the White House National Security Council, the Special Counsel for Post 9/11 National Origin Discrimination at the Department of Justice and in senior roles at the National Counterterrorism Center, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. Shaarik is also a Life Member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

A graduate of the Plan II Honors Program at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Texas School of Law, Shaarik received the 2011 Outstanding Young Texas Ex Award, which recognizes alumni under the age of 40 who have made significant achievements in their careers and service to the University.
